  • Frequently Asked Questions

Here's some questions we get asked regularly:

    • Is it difficult to change accountants?

While changing accountants may feel daunting there is a standard process between accountants that make the process straightforward and simple.

Once you have decided you are going to change accountants it is good to let your current accountants know you are changing.  If you do not feel comfortable doing this your new accountants can prepare an authority letter which is sent to your current accountants.

With the authority letter is sent a request for financial and tax records and any company and trust records.  The accountants will then pass your records and documents onto the new accountant in a relatively timely manner.

This enables a smooth transition from one accountant to another.

    • What is the best structure to set my business up in?

Just like a shoe, once size does not fit all, so one structure is not right for everyone.

We want to understand your situation.

For example: Whether you have assets to protect, in which case a company structure is important.

A company is also taxed at a low rate and best for keeping income tax low. Currently 26%.

If your business is likely to have strong capital growth then a Trust will be important

If you have dependent children over 18 years old or give to a church or other charitable organisations a trust can enable you to lower your taxable income.

While the best structure may be one of these it may also be a combination of both.

    • What is the best way to finance equipment or a vehicle?

A chattel mortgage is usually the best way because:

      • The security is provided by the asset and not your property.
      • The full amount of the GST can be claimed back.  Whereas with a lease the GST is claimed on each payment.

    • What things do I need to do if I’m purchasing a business?

Purchasing a business is exciting and also risky.

It is important that you do not pay too much for the business.  Many businesses owners have rose coloured glasses and see their business much better than it is.

The things that are important to do when buying a business is:

      • Talk the prospective business over with an accountant who had experience with the purchase of the business.  The accountant will be able to tell you whether the business looks like pursuing and asking price is close to reasonable.
      • If it is, have the accountant do an appraisal of the business as to what he thinks it is worth and how you may finance it.
      • Talk to a bank about getting finance.
      • Engage a solicitor to advise you on the contract and other legal issues
      • Do due diligence. Your accountant will do due diligence on the financial and business aspects.  The solicitor will do due diligence on the legal side. It also works best if you have a solicitor and accountant who work well together and communicate well with you.

    • Should I set up a self-managed super fund?

Setting up a self managed super fund can be beneficial if you:

      • Like to have control.
      • Want to invest directly into assets, such as property or shares.
      • Have at least $250,000 in super so that it is economical to cover the costs associated with a self managed super fund.
      • It may be a good way to purchase your business premises.

It is very important that you get advice from a person that is authorised to advice on super funds to ensure that a self managed super fund in right for you.

    • Why do I have a taxable profit, but not the cash to show for it?

This is a common question and concern for business owners.

The reason that you can have good profits and no cash is that there are two sides to managing the business.  One is the sales and the expenses. The other is money in and money out of the business.

Money in,  involves such things as having:

      • Good trade policies so that customers pay you on time.
      • A Business model that enables you to get paid earlier for the work you do.

Money out:  involves such things as having:

      • Good creditor terms.
      • Managing inventory well, so for example you hold the stock that moves and get in the stock that you seldom sell.
      • Manage what you take from the business personally.  It is best to give yourself a wage when you pay your staff and do not take drawings from the bank account.
